GB Liquid Milk Expenditure and Volume Sales

Comparing the 52 weeks ending 26 December 2010 and the 52 weeks ending 25 December 2011:

  • Volume sales of liquid milk rose 1.9% year-on-year (YOY), this rate of growth has started to slow over the last 12 & 4 week periods with growth rates of 0.6% and 0.4% respectively. The removal of the multi buy offers from the some of the large retailers in October may have influenced this slow down in volume growth.
  • Value sales of liquid milk declined 2.8% over the past year which has been driven by the 4.6% decline in average price per litre of liquid milk. Value sales did increase 0.5% YOY over the past 12 weeks, but declined 1.3%YOY in the last 4 weeks.
  • Pasteurised milk remains the largest segment within the liquid milk market with a 85% volume share in the year ending 25th December 2011. In the past year volume sales of Pasteurised milk increased 3.6% YOY, during the same time period value sales declined 2.6%.

 Over the past year the average price per litre of liquid milk was 62p, this declined 4.6% YOY. This was mainly driven by the 6% decline in the average price per litre of pasteurised milk. UHT milk has seen the average price per litre increase 4.8% over the past year to 61p. The rise in average price of UHT milk is also reflected in 12-week and 4-week time periods with growth rates of 5.9% and 4.9% respectively. Sterilised milk has seen the average price per litre decline over last 12 and 4 weeks periods, despite an average price rise per litre of 3.6% over the year. It remains a small share of the milk market recording a 0.5% volume share over the past year.

Doorstep Vrs Retail

Doorstep sales accounted for 3.9% of the total volume of milk sold for household consumption in the 52 weeks ending 25 December 2011, equivalent to 201m litres and down by 18.6% when compared with the previous year.
