UK Dairy Product Production

  • Liquid, cheese and butter production all fell in April compared with last year.
  • Rolling annual results show that raw milk processed into liquid was marginally up compared with the previous year, cheese and butter production were both lower.

The latest provisional data for April show that raw milk processed into liquid was 1.9% lower compared with last year, at 545,820 tonnes. Production for the year ending April shows a 0.1% (9,310 tonnes) increase in liquid milk produced compared to the previous year, to 6.7m tonnes.

Milk processed into butter totalled 10,200 tonnes in April, a fall of 8.9% (1,000 tonnes) compared with the level in April 2009.  Rolling annual data shows that butter production has fallen by 6.6% (7,760 tonnes) to 118,300 tonnes in the year ending April.

Cheese production was 340 tonnes (1.1%) lower in April compared to last year at 33,370 tonnes.  Milk used for cheese production for the year ending April stood at 358,370 tonnes, 3.4% (12,760 tonnes) less than in the previous year.

UK Manufacture of Cheese

Provisional cheese production figures for 2009 show that cheddar production was down by 8.5% compared to the previous year at 238,000 tonnes. Mozzarella production was down in 2009 compared to 2008, 44,000 tonnes were produced which was a 6.4% decrease compared to the previous year. Total cheese production stood at 354,000 tonnes which was a 7.3% decrease compared to the previous year. It must be stressed however that these figures are provisional and are likely to be retrospectively changed.
