Quota

Published 12 October 09

Provisional figures have been provided by the RPA which give butterfat adjusted milk deliveries of 13,096 million litres for 2008/09. Taking into account permanent and predicted temporary conversions, this puts the UK at 1.3 billion litres under quota, 76.5% more than the previous year. This deficit is 569.8 million litres greater than 2007/08, however, start-of-year quota for 2008/09 did increase 2.5% - 348 million litres to 14,569.2 million litres from 2007/08.

The 2008/09 milk year saw a continuing fall in the number of dairy farmers while the number of dairy cows also fell 2.3% between June 2007 and June 2008. Production often affected by weather and in 2008 the UK saw the wettest January since 1928 and this contributed towards the annual rainfall being at the highest level seen since 2000.
