- Muscling on Holsteins - Final Report18 August 09
This project looked at the impacts of selecting Holstein sires with genetcs for better carcase conformation amd muscling
- Lupins in Sustainable Agriculture - Final Report12 August 09
DairyCo was a partner in the five year research project ‘Lupins in Sustainable Agriculture (LISA)’ in the Sustainable Arable LINK Programme. The research, which aimed to investigate the potential of spring sown lupins in arable and mixed farming in the UK, demonstrated that lupin meal could substitute for soya in rations for dairy cows in peak lactation. - Forage Processing of Whole Crop Cereals for Milk Production2 December 09
Two experiments with dairy cows in early lactation were conducted;
In Year 1 the effects of processing (grinding) at harvest and stubble height on intake, milk yield and diet digestibility were determined.
In Year 2 the effects of carbohydrate supplement to processed, urea-treated whole crop wheat were determined and compared with cows fed maize silage.
- Vasectomised Bulls as an Aid to Heat Detection.2 December 09
The objective of the project was to determine and record the effect of a vasectomised bull on a dairy herd. This was to allow practical guidance to be given to farmers on the suitability, effect and management of a vasectomised bull. - Forage Brassica for Out Wintering Stock3 December 09
Literature review exploring the breeding of forage brassica for out wintering stock. - Endocrine Management of Bovine Infertility11 December 09
The aim of this project was to develop a further understanding of the physiological factors underlying fertility problems in dairy cows in order to establish non-invasive methods for identifying cows suffering from these problems and then develop targeted methods of treating them. - Review on Calving Pattern Management11 December 09
The objective of the project was to evaluate different calving seasons and their implications in relation to herd performance, management issues and financial viability. Flowcharts and sensitivity tables allow the individual farmer to assess the impact of changing from their current calving pattern to an alternative pattern. - A Study into Milking Machine Automation11 December 09
The objective of this study is to provide independent advice to dairy farmers to allow them to make informed decisions when investing in new milking systems and facilities.
